Brazilian coffee cooperative Expocacer has taken a significant step toward sustainable logistics by completing its first coffee shipment using a sailing vessel. The shipment, equivalent to 1,596 sixty-kilogram coffee bags—or about five shipping containers—was loaded onto the Artemis, a modern sail cargo ship, and is en route to Europe.
This milestone highlights Expocacer’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the coffee supply chain. The Artemis, constructed in France, operates with minimal environmental impact, using wind and solar energy as its primary power sources. A combustion engine is used only when wind conditions are insufficient.
A New Era of Sustainable Coffee Shipping
Expocacer’s innovative shipping initiative is the result of a collaboration with Seaforte, FAFCoffees, Belco, and TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT). The project aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable production and transportation methods, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
“This initiative represents a shift in how we approach coffee logistics,” said Simão Pedro de Lima, CEO of Expocacer. “By adopting innovative practices, we help the coffee ecosystem thrive. It’s about fostering regenerative ideas and creating a transparent dialogue for the future of the planet and its people.”
Controlled-Origin Coffees on Board
The coffee being transported is 100% produced by Expocacer’s members within the Cerrado Mineiro Designation of Origin. This designation guarantees the traceability and authenticity of the product, ensuring customers receive high-quality, sustainably sourced coffee.
The Cerrado Mineiro region is recognized for its unique climate and soil conditions, which contribute to the distinct flavor profile of its coffee. By shipping Controlled-Origin coffees, Expocacer underscores its dedication to both environmental sustainability and maintaining the integrity of its product.
The Artemis: A Modern Maritime Marvel
The Artemis, a cutting-edge sailing vessel, measures 81 meters in length and 12 meters in width. Designed for efficiency and eco-friendliness, it requires a crew of at least eight members to operate. The journey to France is expected to take approximately 20 days, demonstrating the viability of wind-powered cargo ships in international trade.
Unlike traditional cargo ships that rely heavily on fossil fuels, the Artemis exemplifies the potential of renewable energy in shipping. This method not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also represents a broader push toward sustainable maritime practices.
Expocacer: Supporting Farmers and Sustainability
Headquartered in Patrocínio, Minas Gerais, Expocacer is a cooperative that supports more than 740 coffee producers. The organization plays a vital role in promoting regional economic development, offering advanced infrastructure that includes warehouses capable of storing over one million coffee bags. Expocacer exports to over 35 countries across five continents, ensuring global reach for its members’ high-quality coffee.
This sailing project complements Expocacer’s broader mission to create a sustainable and profitable future for its members. By integrating environmentally friendly practices into its operations, the cooperative sets an example for other players in the coffee industry.
A Symbol of Change
The Artemis’s voyage marks more than just a logistical achievement—it represents a shift in how industries can balance growth with environmental responsibility. As consumer demand for sustainable practices continues to rise, initiatives like this demonstrate the coffee industry’s ability to innovate and adapt.
Expocacer’s partnership with leading organizations in logistics and sustainable transport shows the importance of collaboration in addressing climate challenges. Together, they are shaping a future where coffee production and transportation leave a smaller environmental footprint while maintaining quality and efficiency.
Looking Ahead
As the Artemis sails toward Europe, this project sets a precedent for other industries to explore green logistics. For Expocacer, it’s another step in a journey that prioritizes the well-being of the planet and the prosperity of its coffee-growing community.
By proving that sailing vessels can play a role in modern logistics, Expocacer inspires both the coffee industry and global supply chains to rethink traditional methods and embrace sustainable innovation.
