Henrico County, Va. — A popular specialty coffee shop in Henrico County, known for its unique menu and community appeal, is preparing to close its doors just days before Christmas.
Surrounding Counties, located at 8801-A Three Chopt Road, announced its impending closure in a heartfelt Instagram post . “Dear friends, it seems as though our little experiment in the field of suburban specialty coffee and specialty coffee foods is drawing to a close,” the post stated.
Opened in October 2020, the shop quickly became a destination for its specialty coffee, teas, and breakfast offerings, including its standout kolaches—sweet and savory pastries with Czech roots. The owners proudly shared how they refined their kolache-making craft, even putting Virginia “on the kolache map.”
“We believed, even during the challenges of the 2020 pandemic, that there was a demand for high-quality morning foods and beverages wherever you call home,” they wrote.
The reason behind the closure was not detailed, but the coffee shop hinted that limitations with the current space made it unviable to continue.
Surrounding Counties will officially close on Sunday, Dec. 22. December will serve as a farewell month, culminating in a closing party to celebrate the journey with customers.
Following the closure, the business plans to analyze its four years of operations to determine whether its concept was a financial success. The owners remain optimistic about the future.
“It is likely that those results will show that this concept makes sense because it makes money,” they said, hinting at a potential revival of their suburban specialty coffee concept in a new location.
Coffee enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned for updates, as a reinvented version of the business might soon reappear in another strip mall.
