Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced major strides in the country’s coffee production, strengthening Ethiopia’s role as both the birthplace and a key player in the global coffee market.
Over the past five years, Ethiopia’s annual coffee production has doubled, now reaching 1 million tonnes, up from 500,000 tonnes. This impressive growth was reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.
In fiscal year 2016, Ethiopia’s coffee sector generated over $1.4 billion in revenue, and this year, the government has set a bold target of $2 billion.
The country’s coffee productivity has been boosted by the adoption of modern irrigation systems and mechanized harvesting methods. These innovations have led to yields of up to 60 quintals per hectare, showcasing Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its coffee industry and increasing its share of the global market.
