According to the regional Department of Agriculture, the total area dedicated to coffee plantations reached 3,022 acres in the 2024-2025 financial year, up from just 1,148 acres in the previous year.

The coffee plantations are spread across several districts, with 470 acres in Dawei, 1,200 acres in Myeik, 845 acres in Bokpyin, and 507 acres in Kawthoung. Robusta coffee, which thrives in equatorial regions, is well-suited to the climate of Taninthayi. The coffee plants are typically ready for harvest after four to five years of cultivation, with the harvest season running from December to January. Myanmar exports Robusta coffee beans to international markets, further boosting the region’s economy.

In addition to coffee, the plantations follow an intercropping system, where coffee is grown alongside perennial crops like rubber and betel plants. The Department of Agriculture supports local farmers by providing seedlings and technical assistance, helping them increase their income, create local jobs, and improve the socioeconomic conditions of the community.
