Jonathan Allen has created a safe haven for the vulnerable and unhoused community of Nelson with the opening of Brandi’s Place, a 24/7 café dedicated to providing warmth, connection, and nourishment to those in need. The café, which opened its doors on December 16, offers coffee and syrupy French toast to anyone who enters—no menu, no obligation to pay.
“There’s no pressure to pay. The goal is to offer a place where people can feel included, escape the elements, and experience a sense of love and connection,” says Allen, who has worked at Stepping Stones shelter for Nelson CARES and as a peer support worker with the Rural Empowered Drug Users Network.
The café, located in downtown Nelson on Baker Street next to Hendryx St. Forest Garden Park, was inspired by a friend’s suggestion and fueled by the tragic death of one of Allen’s clients. Thirty volunteers have signed on to help keep the café running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the winter months, with a lease set to expire on March 31.
Allen, who is financing the café out of pocket, charges a modest $2-$2.50 for hot drinks and $5 for meals, though he ensures no one is turned away if they can’t pay. He is also working with grant writers to secure more stable funding for the future.
While the café is currently operating on a temporary lease, Allen hopes to continue the service beyond spring, even if it requires relocating or finding new management.
