The Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (PDTT) is actively supporting the development of a coffee-based economy in Wayu Village, located in Sigi District, Central Sulawesi.
M Fachri, the ministry’s Director of Flagship Product Development, emphasized the importance of downstreaming local products such as coffee, cocoa, vanilla, coconut, and palm oil in the region. Speaking on Sunday, he highlighted the ministry’s goal of enhancing the value-added production of these commodities in village economies.
Starting next year, the government plans to identify certain agricultural and plantation products as national strategic commodities. Fachri explained that this initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to halt the export of raw materials, aiming to process and add value to local products before export.
“The downstream process increases the added value of products,” Fachri noted, adding that strengthening the coffee sector in Sigi could lead to greater opportunities for international sales.
He hopes that coffee-producing villages in Sigi District will receive the necessary mentorship to improve their product quality and expand their market reach abroad.
In the future, Fachri envisions the district’s villages developing into key exporters of high-quality products. These villages will be included in the PDTT Ministry’s export program, which provides comprehensive training from upstream to downstream processes, ensuring sustainable development based on local strengths.
Sigi District is home to a diverse range of coffee varieties, including arabica from Dompu in West Marawola Sub-district and robusta from the Lindu region of Kulawi Raya and Palolo.
