Mettricks, a popular coffee shop in Woolston, has closed its doors after serving customers for more than seven years. The café shut down on Monday, with owner Spencer Bowman citing ongoing construction at the Centenary Quay development as a major factor.
Bowman, who founded the Southampton coffee chain, described the past three months as the most challenging in the café’s history. The construction of high-rise buildings in the area, along with long-term cladding works, has left the coffee shop surrounded by scaffolding and fencing for over a year. As a result, many customers mistakenly believed the café had already closed.
“The complex now feels oppressive, and the scaffolding has boxed us in,” said Bowman. “It’s made the café hard to access, and with rising costs and the recent government budget, keeping the business alive became impossible.”
Bowman added that he had originally opened Mettricks at Centenary Quay because of the area’s promise as a riverside development. “I brought Mettricks here for the potential of the site, which was supposed to become a new landmark, similar to Ocean Village,” he said.
However, the ongoing construction has made the location less inviting, ultimately leading to the decision to close.
