The Nelson family, known for their popular garden centers, has created a warm, inviting space for the community to enjoy, even during colder months. “From September to March, when the weather makes it hard to enjoy outdoor spaces, people can come to the greenhouse,” said Nelson, who runs the family business with his brother, Jessie. “It feels like being in the garden, and it nourishes our souls. It has become a real community gathering spot.”
The family’s Shawnee cafe, located at 7036 Nieman Road, was first launched in 2019. Over time, the cafe’s popularity grew, leading it to operate year-round. Now, the family is expanding the concept further. They plan to open a Café Equinox trailer inside their Liberty store’s greenhouse at 830 W. Liberty Drive later this month or in early February. This addition will be open throughout the year.
The family also has plans to eventually transition their Overland Park cafe, currently located in the greenhouse at 8424 Farley St., to a full-time, year-round operation.
