Anna Bannanas Coffeehouse, a beloved fixture in Northwest Portland’s Nob Hill, closed its doors on January 1 after more than 30 years in business. The café, which began as a coffee cart in 1993 and became a brick-and-mortar shop in 1994, was a nostalgic spot for many.
Rand Klemp, who took over the coffeehouse in 2015 after it was sold by original owner Bryant Anderson in 2014, shared the news of the closure. “Unfortunately, we had to make a really sad and tough call,” Klemp said. “We’re working through it. It’s like a grief.”
Known for its quirky vibe and grungy basement, Anna Bannanas served as a gathering place for a diverse crowd, from locals to visitors. Over the years, it became a hangout for notable figures, including NPR host Ari Shapiro, filmmaker Gus Van Sant, who filmed a scene for Paranoid Park there, and members of the rock band The Dandy Warhols. As Sarah Anderson, Bryant’s wife, recalled in 2011, the café was a home for writers, artists, and students alike.
