Today, customers at Penny Lane Coffeehouse in downtown Evansville enjoyed free lattes with a side of solidarity. To receive a complimentary coffee, customers were asked to buy a sandwich and share their honest thoughts on CenterPoint Energy.
This promotion came just one week after the utility commission approved a rate hike for CenterPoint bills, which left many people feeling frustrated. The coffee shop saw this as an opportunity for customers to vent their frustrations while offering a small treat to make their day a little better.
In an unexpected show of support, one customer even donated $500 to Penny Lane Coffeehouse, expressing gratitude for the gesture.
Manager Sierra Schmity explained the idea behind the promotion: “Everybody’s electricity bills are really expensive right now, ours was crazy expensive. So it’s a way for everybody to get together and be upset together and kind of give back to the people who are having issues with CenterPoint.”
The coffee shop reported that many customers have continued to visit to share their feelings and join the community effort.
