The coffee shop’s ethos of community empowerment is evident in its unique business model. Alongside the usual offerings of coffee and baked goods from local artisan Rolled Out Bakery, Beanchain also houses a tattoo artist, seamlessly integrating diverse talents under one roof.
“We wanted to create a space where everyone has a voice and an equal stake,” explains David Baxter. The establishment operates on a cooperative model, where each member holds an equal share in the business, fostering a sense of democratic ownership.
For the Baxters, Beanchain represents more than just a business venture; it’s a catalyst for social change. With a background in software engineering, David leverages his skills to empower employees, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
Central to Beanchain’s mission is its commitment to fair wages and employee well-being. Despite facing financial challenges, the Baxters prioritize paying their staff a living wage, with plans to increase wages as the business grows.
“We’re not profitable yet, but our goal is to ensure that our workers are fairly compensated,” says Shannon Baxter. “We aim to create a sustainable model that uplifts our employees and supports the local community.”
As Beanchain prepares to celebrate its one-year anniversary, the Baxters reflect on their journey from a humble cart to a thriving community hub.
