Compass One, a division of Compass Group UK & Ireland, has announced its acquisition of the UK-based hospital coffee chain Peabody Coffee for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move aims to enhance Compass One’s presence within the National Health Service (NHS).
Established in 1997, Peabody Coffee operates ten coffee shops located within NHS facilities. The Bedfordshire-based chain is known for its commitment to sustainability, serving Fairtrade coffee sourced from Miko Group’s Puro Coffee, and utilizing La Cimbali espresso machines at its outlets.
Claudia Mascino, who has been at the helm of Peabody Coffee as Managing Director since 2005, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition. She emphasized that joining Compass One would facilitate the opening of additional coffee shops across NHS locations, with new cafés currently in development at seven hospital sites in the UK.
“We are really excited about the opportunity that joining Compass presents. Bringing the Peabody Coffee offer to more NHS hospitals has long been an ambition of mine. Our values around sustainability, great food, and coffee are entrenched in our business and what makes us special. I am passionate about supporting our NHS and delighted to be able to grow and invest further in our business,” Mascino stated.
In a press release, Compass Group highlighted that this acquisition will allow Compass One to broaden its services within the NHS, complementing its existing offerings in catering, cleaning, portering, and security.
Mark Webster, CEO of Compass One, remarked, “We have long admired the ethos of Peabody Coffee. We are excited about the opportunity to support their growth, bringing Peabody Coffee to many more NHS sites in the future for NHS staff, patients, and visitors to enjoy.”
Compass Group provides catering and facilities management services across various sectors, including offices, universities, and sports stadiums in 33 markets globally. Earlier this year, in January 2024, the company expanded further by acquiring premium UK contract caterer and hospitality services group CH&CO for £475 million ($600 million), adding over 900 clients and approximately £450 million ($570 million) in annual revenue to its portfolio.
