Reborn Coffee, a specialty coffee retailer based in the United States, has acquired a 58 percent ownership in Bbang Ssaem Bakery, a South Korean bakery chain operating 31 locations. This acquisition, which comes in the wake of a memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in July 2024, represents a significant step for Reborn Coffee in expanding its brand presence and diversifying its offerings within the bakery industry.
According to Reborn Coffee, the acquisition underscores the company’s commitment to growth and brand strengthening in international markets. By entering the bakery sector, Reborn Coffee seeks to create a unique synergy between its specialty coffee offerings and Bbang Ssaem’s bakery expertise. This venture is viewed as a strategic alignment that will enhance Reborn’s market appeal while expanding its product offerings beyond coffee.
The acquisition also opens doors for Reborn Coffee’s entrance into South Korea’s highly competitive franchise market. The company aims to establish a scalable franchise model that blends premium coffee and bakery experiences, catering to a broader consumer base. Reborn Coffee’s plans include leveraging the existing infrastructure and customer base of Bbang Ssaem Bakery to accelerate its growth and reach new markets within South Korea.
Despite Bbang Ssaem Bakery’s reported annual revenue of approximately $7 million as of November 2024—considered below average for the industry—Reborn Coffee sees the partnership as a strategic growth opportunity. The company is optimistic about using its expertise and brand recognition to increase revenue and expand market reach for both companies.
“This acquisition marks a pivotal moment in our mission to expand Reborn Coffee’s brand footprint through strategic partnerships,” said Jay Kim, CEO of Reborn Coffee. “By combining Bbang Ssaem’s excellence in the bakery sector with our specialty coffee, we are creating a distinctive offering that resonates with customers. Through our franchise model, we look forward to collaborating with passionate entrepreneurs to deliver premium experiences across South Korea and beyond, setting a new standard for the café industry.”
Through this partnership, Reborn Coffee hopes to carve out a unique niche in the South Korean café market, bringing together premium coffee and artisanal bakery products in a setting that appeals to both local tastes and international trends.
