The Cup of Excellence (CoE) 2024 has revealed its winners from Brazil, with 13 exceptional coffees from 10 regions across the country receiving scores above 90 points.
Brazil’s CoE competition features three distinct categories: Experimental, focusing on coffees that undergo induced fermentation; Dry, which evaluates sun-dried and naturally processed coffees; and Wet Process, which judges coffees that are pulped, de-mucilaged, and hulled.
The top scorers were Ronaldo da Silva from Sítio Santa Luzia, who earned 92.32 points, and Vitor Marcelo Barbosa from Fazenda Sobrado e Bonito de Cima, with 91.93 points.
“We are extremely proud of this 25th anniversary edition, which is held in Brazil, where it all started,” said Vinicius Estrela, Executive Director of the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA). “The quality of these coffees was outstanding, with high scores that impressed everyone. Every year, this competition helps us discover and highlight the diversity and quality of Brazilian specialty coffee.”
A total of 27 coffees were named CoE winners by 22 judges from around the world. These winning coffees will be available for purchase through an online auction on December 10, hosted on the ACE website. Buyers from across the globe will have the opportunity to compete for these exclusive lots.
“This year’s competition was defined by refinement and sophistication,” said Jesús Salazar, CoE Head Judge. “The key takeaway would be ‘coffee with elegance and sweetness.’ I was blown away by some samples that offered new and unexpected experiences. Brazil continues to showcase an extraordinary level of diversity and quality in coffee.”
The specialty coffee market is expected to reach US$152.62 billion by 2030, according to Brainy Insights. The CoE competition plays a key role in boosting the global recognition and growth of the market.
“I am very happy; we worked so hard to win first place in this prestigious competition,” said Ronaldo da Silva. “I’ve been involved in coffee since I was a child, and bringing value to our product is what keeps us going.”
Da Silva also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity: “I’d like to thank BSCA for encouraging us to participate, even though we are small producers. This will change our lives, as buyers will now seek us out—not just for the winning coffee, but for our other varieties as well.”
