Wood Village’s newest coffee shop is already establishing itself as a neighborhood favorite. On a quiet Thursday morning, the greetings are warm and familiar:
“Welcome back.”
“Good to see you again.”
“How are you?”
Despite a low-profile “silent opening” just weeks ago, Ki Coffee, located at 23609 N.E. Halsey St. in The Byway’s business district, is quickly becoming a go-to spot for the community. From caffeine-fueled commuters to families seeking a cozy brunch venue, Owner Misa Thompson aims to make Ki Coffee a welcoming space for everyone.
A Thoughtful Start
“I wanted to ease into things with a silent opening,” said Thompson. “Having people here gives me energy and excitement as we finalize the build-out.”
The response so far has been encouraging. “People stop by, even just to peek in and say hello. They always promise to return and support us soon,” she added.
More Than Just Coffee
While Thompson describes her shop as “just another coffee shop,” Ki Coffee stands out with an expansive menu of beverages and food. The drinks menu balances traditional offerings with creative options like the “Bear Hug” — a blend of vanilla, honey, cinnamon, espresso, and milk — and the indulgent “Goblin King,” which features caramel, white chocolate, and vanilla.
However, what truly sets Ki Coffee apart is its robust food menu.
“Food has always been our thing,” Thompson said.
Breakfast and brunch selections shine here. Customer favorites include:
- The Awkward Aardvark: Egg, cheddar, sausage, avocado, red onion sauce, and pesto, often served on a jalapeño bagel.
- Griffith Drive: A vegetarian-friendly option.
- Anam A Nom: Highlighting turkey bacon as the star.
- Fullmetal Alchemist Avocado Toast: Topped with fried eggs, bacon, microgreens, and sauces.
In addition to its menu, the shop offers wholesale coffee beans, loose-leaf teas, and a curated “gift pocket” featuring jewelry, bags, stickers, and other unique items.
A Vision for Wood Village
Ki Coffee is Thompson’s second location, following her flagship store in Beaverton. Initially considering Hillsboro for expansion, Thompson shifted her focus during the pandemic after exploring East Multnomah County.
“I fell in love with this space — the windows, the high ceilings,” she said. “It’s so different from Beaverton. It’s quieter, slower-paced, and exactly what I was looking for.”
While the pace may be slower, Thompson hopes to create a vibrant atmosphere where customers linger, connect, and enjoy their time.
“The goal is to fill these seats and foster that energy you find in a great coffee shop,” she said with a smile.
Building for the Future
The shop’s build-out is nearing completion, with remaining work focused on behind-the-scenes details like plumbing and electrical systems. Thompson has taken a hands-on approach, learning from YouTube tutorials and making frequent trips to Home Depot to finish the project.
Currently, the shop operates from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, but hours will expand once the build-out is finished, likely by early December. Thompson plans to be mindful of overextending herself, learning from past experiences in Beaverton.
Tentative hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but she jokes, “When I start getting braindead is when I’ll close.”
Looking ahead, Ki Coffee plans to offer cocktails, beer, and wine by January, with outdoor seating set to debut in the spring.
