Starbucks Struggles with Declining Sales, Launches Recovery Plan

by Jessica

Starbucks, the world’s largest coffee chain, has long held its position as a global leader with more than 40,000 stores and $32 billion in U.S. revenue last year. However, 2024 has brought significant challenges, forcing the company to take decisive action to regain its footing.

The first warning sign came in late 2023 when the company’s iconic Red Cup Day failed to drive a notable increase in store visits, according to foot traffic data from Placer.ai. Since then, the challenges have only intensified. For three consecutive quarters, Starbucks has reported declining global same-store sales. In the U.S., same-store sales fell 6%, while traffic dropped 10% last quarter. This marks the worst sales period for the company in 14 years, according to Restaurant Business Magazine.

In response to the downturn, Starbucks brought in Brian Niccol, former Chipotle CEO, as its new leader over the summer, following the resignation of Laxman Narasimhan after just 18 months. In a candid open letter in September, Niccol acknowledged the company’s struggles and outlined his vision for its recovery.

Niccol pointed to several key issues, including a departure from Starbucks’ roots as a welcoming, community-oriented coffeehouse. “In some places—especially in the U.S.—we aren’t always delivering,” Niccol wrote. He cited inconsistent product quality, overwhelming menus, long wait times, and chaotic handoffs as areas needing improvement.

To reverse the slump, Starbucks is focusing on three main strategies: improving menu execution, supporting baristas, and re-establishing its identity as a community gathering space. These efforts include investing in technology, streamlining the supply chain, and enhancing its mobile app and ordering system.

Niccol’s leadership comes at a critical time as Starbucks works to reconnect with customers and regain its reputation as a leader in the coffee industry. Whether these initiatives will be enough to restore the company’s success remains to be seen.
