Southeast Sioux Falls is set to get a new coffee destination in 2025 as Oregon-based coffee chain The Human Bean opens its first location in the city. Local franchisee Elizabeth Menke will bring the popular brand to the area, offering a unique coffee experience that focuses on community connection and high-quality beverages.
Menke, a former speech pathologist with 15 years of experience, was drawn to The Human Bean after seeking a change and exploring potential business ventures. “I had lots of ideas, but I kept coming back to coffee,” Menke said. After researching various brands, she was drawn to The Human Bean’s focus on “connecting with people and being part of the community.”
The new 600-square-foot drive-thru and walk-up location will be situated at 2801 E. Jackson St., near 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue. Before committing to the franchise, Menke and her husband visited a nearby Human Bean location in Missouri to experience the brand firsthand. “After seeing the building, talking to the baristas, and tasting the product, I was sold,” she said.
The Human Bean menu features specialty-grade coffee, real-fruit smoothies, whole-leaf teas, a proprietary energy drink, and hot breakfast items such as sandwiches and bagels. Each coffee beverage is topped with a chocolate-covered espresso bean, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to exceeding customer expectations.
The location’s strong potential was highlighted by Isaac Jorgensen of Bender Commercial Real Estate Services. “The access and visibility are great, and with new developments filling in the area, this is a fantastic spot for The Human Bean,” Jorgensen said.
The new café will also feature a patio area, designed to create a neighborhood-friendly atmosphere. “I want it to feel like part of the neighborhood, where people can walk up, meet their neighbors, and enjoy their coffee,” Menke said.
The Human Bean, founded in southern Oregon in 1998, has grown to more than 250 locations nationwide. Scott Anderson, COO of The Human Bean, expressed excitement about bringing the brand to Sioux Falls. “We’re thrilled to offer a new coffee experience to Sioux Falls, where customers can share special moments with a friendly face.”
The chain is also known for hosting fundraising events, with proceeds benefiting local communities.
