The Gaff coffee shop, located in the Catford Shopping Centre, will temporarily serve drinks, food, and showcase local art until a new operator is found for Catford Mews.
Originally starting as a stall at Deptford Market, The Gaff now has three locations across the borough. The new Catford shop is a collaboration between Lewisham Council and the Catford Regeneration Partnership Limited (CRPL), following the closure of Catford Mews.
The coffee shop will offer affordable food and drinks, including coffee for under £3 and dishes like stew and dahl for £4.95. It will also display work by Lewisham artists. Additionally, The Gaff is providing barista training for Lewisham residents at the London Living Wage, facilitated by the council’s Lewisham Works employment service. Three people are already in training.
Sophie Carter, site manager at the new Catford location, expressed excitement about the initiative: “We’re thrilled to work with Lewisham Council to run this temporary community coffee shop. We’re also happy to offer our walls to Lewisham artists and are open to collaborating with local community groups.”
Councillor Kim Powell, cabinet member for business, jobs, and skills, praised The Gaff for its community-focused approach: “The Gaff’s commitment to affordable food, barista training, and even providing free coffee for NHS staff during the pandemic shows how dedicated they are to supporting the local community.”
The council funded the space’s fit-out and used local contractors to convert the vacant unit. The new Gaff shop is located at Unit 24, 29 Winslade Way, Catford, SE6 4JU, opposite Yoga House London. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
