Bill and Elaine Kelvie have always dreamed of opening a coffee shop, and now they’re living that dream in Pocatello. The couple are the proud owners of Gate City Coffee and Wine Bistro, located at 320 West Center Street.
“We love coffee. We’re addicted to it!” Bill says with a smile.
After attending the Bellissimo American Barista & Coffee School in Portland, Oregon, the Kelveies opened Gate City Coffee in 2022. Since then, their business has flourished, expanding with the recent opening of Gate City Gift Shop and Gallery, along with Nostalgia Antiques, next door. The gallery offers extra seating for customers and features artwork by local artists.
With a cup of black coffee in hand — his go-to drink — Bill explains the reason behind the expansion: “We simply ran out of space,” he says.
Originally from Boise and Montana, Bill and Elaine moved to eastern Idaho several years ago. Elaine was born in Germany, and after pursuing careers in different industries, their passion for coffee led them to Portland for barista training.
While running the coffee shop together has been rewarding, their location in downtown Pocatello hasn’t come without challenges. After six months of renovations on the building, the closure of the Center Street underpass last summer had a negative impact on business.
