Sweet Nate’s Coffee, a popular mobile coffee shop known for its locally made coffee and breakfast options, has officially opened its first permanent location. Owners Todd Matthews and John Jacob launched their business in a mobile trailer in October 2021, quickly gaining a loyal following. Now, just over three years later, they are offering the same beloved menu items in a storefront at the Oliver House, 27 Broadway St.
The new shop, which opened on December 4, was previously home to the Onyx Cafe. It is named in honor of Matthews’ late father, who was affectionately known as “Sweet Nate.”
“We wanted to have something more consistent that people could always come to for our experience,” Matthews explained. He also noted that the mobile coffee truck, while popular, isn’t as practical during the winter months.
Sweet Nate’s Coffee brings its signature offerings to the storefront, including specialty lattes and bagel sandwiches inspired by Bagel Street Deli in Athens, Ohio. The new location retains the cozy, welcoming vibe of the original truck, with a special emphasis on music. A corner of the café features nearly 200 vinyl records and a functioning record player, reflecting the owners’ shared love for music. Guests can even request specific records to be played while they enjoy their coffee.
The shop is divided into three distinct areas. The front room functions as the main café, with the counter and ordering space. As customers move toward the back, they encounter a second room designed for conversation and casual seating, providing a relaxed hangout atmosphere. The back-left room features a long conference table, complete with office supplies and a whiteboard. Matthews encourages patrons to use this space for study groups, meetings, and other collaborative activities.
