The owner of Morningside Cafe, a beloved coffee shop in Detroit, was left in disbelief after discovering major damage caused by vandals. The incident took place on December 27, and it will cost thousands of dollars to repair the damage.
“I was just dumbfounded, shocked,” said Jeffrey Lewis II, the cafe’s owner.
When Lewis arrived to open his shop, he found the front window completely shattered. “It was completely shattered, pretty much the entire window,” he said. Security camera footage revealed that two individuals threw a heavy block at the window. Lewis recognized one of the suspects.
“One of the gentlemen has actually been inside our cafe before. He’s asked for handouts,” Lewis explained. “There’s been a couple of times when I’ve given him money.”
Lewis has urged the suspects to come forward. He added that Detroit police are currently investigating the case, with a detective already reviewing the footage.
Despite the damage, Lewis expressed his gratitude for the community’s support. “All the love and well wishes, those who have come in and given me hugs and told me it’s going to be okay, it’s definitely been appreciated,” he said.
For Lewis, it’s the people of Detroit that keep him motivated. “It’s the people, you know, that’s what makes my job. That’s why I get up seven days a week to be here; it’s the people.”
