At Get a Gato, visitors can enjoy Colombian-inspired food and drinks while spending time with up to 12 friendly cats in the back lounge. The café also offers the unique opportunity to adopt one of these furry companions.
Each cat wears a color-coded collar to indicate how approachable they are. Green-collared cats are very friendly and love to interact with guests, while yellow means the cat may be a bit shy or new to the space. There are no red-collared cats currently, but typically, red indicates a cat that needs some space.
Jackie Starker, the café’s executive director, explained, “Green means they are very friendly and outgoing, you are free to pet them and play with them. Yellow is that they are either maybe new to the space or a little shy, so just go slowly with them, and red means they need space.”
Get a Gato has partnered with Morris Animal Refuge to serve as a satellite adoption center, helping more cats find homes. “What it really does is expose more animals to the City of Philadelphia, and that’s what we really need because there are a ton of homeless cats out there,” said Lewis Checchia, executive director and CEO of the refuge.
All adoption applications are processed through and approved by the refuge.
