The Laikipia County Government is working to diversify markets for farmers by promoting coffee farming in the region. Governor Joshua Irungu highlighted the favorable climate in Marmanet, Githiga, and Ol-Moran wards, making them ideal for coffee cultivation.
While Laikipia is traditionally known for livestock farming, the Governor emphasized plans to shift towards coffee farming. This initiative aims to reduce the area’s reliance on livestock and address the ongoing issue of livestock rustling.
“This is a form of diversification that will enable the people of the area to embrace crop farming as an alternative to livestock farming,” Irungu stated during his visit to Lela village in Kirima Sub-County, where he toured the farm of an investor who has planted over 4,000 Batian coffee trees. The project also seeks to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
