Naenae’s Trade School Kitchen (TSK) Café is teaming up with Hutt City Council to bring a new pop-up coffee stand to the Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness centre. The café will operate for three months as a pilot project, aiming to assess demand from pool visitors.
The decision not to include a permanent café in the facility’s design was made to avoid competing with local businesses. However, several local spots, including Trade School Kitchen Café, are located directly across the road, offering coffee and food.
Nic Drew-Crawshaw, Chair of Trade School Industries, believes the pop-up will be a convenient option for pool users, particularly those supervising children. “Being able to grab a coffee at the pool will not only enhance the experience but will also support a local social enterprise and provide employment for people who may face barriers to finding good work,” he said.
The café, known for its excellent coffee and community-focused service, prides itself on manaakitanga, the Māori concept of hospitality and care. “The pop-up at the pool allows us to extend that welcome to all pool visitors,” Drew-Crawshaw added.
The $68 million Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness centre, which opened on December 4, is already drawing attention from the local community and is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to Naenae every year.
