Laikipia County Shifts Focus to Coffee Farming for Market Diversification

by Jessica

In an effort to diversify markets for local farmers, the Laikipia County Government is promoting coffee farming in the region.

Governor Joshua Irungu highlighted that coffee farming has great potential in the Marmanet, Githiga, and Ol-Moran wards due to the area’s favorable climate. While Laikipia is traditionally known for livestock farming, Irungu revealed plans to transition parts of the region toward coffee cultivation. He believes this shift will help reduce the county’s reliance on livestock and address the ongoing issue of livestock rustling.

“This diversification will encourage the community to embrace crop farming as a viable alternative to livestock farming,” Irungu said.

Irungu made the comments on Tuesday during a visit to Lela village in the Luonyiek area of Kirima Sub-County. He toured the farm of an investor who has already planted over 4,000 Batian coffee trees. The project aims not only to promote coffee farming but also to tackle challenges posed by climate change.

The move is also expected to create new employment opportunities, especially for youth and women, in the region.
