Zach Moores, owner of Crows Coffee, is expanding his business in a big way. After opening his first cafe a decade ago and adding two more locations, he’s now planning a major expansion. This time, Moores has purchased two buildings covering more than 10,500 square feet on Troost Avenue in Kansas City.
Although Moores initially had a smaller plan, the size of the buildings led him to rethink his vision. The new space will not only house a coffee roasting facility, but also a wholesale bakery designed to supply other local cafes. In a second phase, the site will include a cafe and an outdoor space for community gatherings.
“I know some people are questioning the location,” Moores said. “It’s a big step for me. The space is huge, and there’s a lot of room to grow. Even though it’s a scary move that puts the whole business on the line, I believe in the vision for this new space.”
The building at 3308 Troost, which Moores is using as the northern part of the complex, may seem small from the street, but it stretches deep into the lot. Inside, it boasts tall ceilings, a barrel roof, and skylights. Over the years, the space has been used by various businesses, including a paint store, an auto body repair shop, a cab company, an egg wholesaler, and a flea market.
