A new micro-business at Amos Alonzo High School, the Charlie Charger Coffee Cart, is offering more than just coffee. Run by students in the ULTIMA program (Utilizing Learning Tools in Meaningful Activities), the coffee cart is a unique initiative that helps students build essential life skills.
The ULTIMA program is designed to support students with functional academics, daily living skills, communication, sensory experiences, and vocational skills. Through the Coffee Cart, students gain hands-on experience that promotes independence, communication, problem-solving, and social interaction, while also preparing them for future employment.
The students take on various roles in the business, including filling out order tickets, preparing and delivering orders, handling transactions, and managing the customer rewards program with punch cards. These tasks help students develop confidence and responsibility, all while showcasing their abilities to the school community.
The ultimate goal is for the Charlie Charger Coffee Cart to become self-sustaining by the 2025-2026 school year, providing valuable experience and fostering a sense of inclusion for the students involved.
