Cornell University has announced that La Colombe Coffee Roasters will replace Starbucks as the primary coffee vendor on campus starting in the summer of 2025. This change comes one and a half years after the university decided to discontinue its partnership with Starbucks.
Founded in 1994 and based in Philadelphia, La Colombe is known for its classic blends and single-origin coffee. The company operates its own locations and supplies coffee to retailers and cafés across the country. La Colombe is also committed to sustainable sourcing practices, ensuring producers are paid above fair trade prices and organizing community cleanups led by employees, as stated in a February 5 announcement from Cornell Student & Campus Life.
This decision follows a National Labor Relations Board ruling that Starbucks unlawfully retaliated against Cornell students at its Ithaca locations who supported unionization. The company was found to have denied some students leave during academic breaks as part of its efforts to hinder the unionization process.
