Costa Coffee Expands Tea Offering Across 7,000 Costa Express Machines

by Jessica

Costa Coffee has rolled out tea across 7,000 of its self-serve Costa Express machines in the UK, following a successful trial with ten units in April 2024.

The UK’s largest branded coffee chain described tea as a key part of UK culture and said the move was aimed at making it easier for customers to enjoy their favorite brew while on the go. A regular cup of tea from a Costa Express machine is priced around £2.30 ($2.85).

“We know how much our customers value a great cup of coffee, and the same goes for tea – which is an integral part of daily life in the UK,” said Andrew Miller, Express and Corporate Sales Director for UK&I at Costa Coffee.

By adding tea to its Costa Express machines, the Coca-Cola-owned coffee chain aims to cater to value-conscious customers, especially as more people are cutting back on their regular coffee purchases amid the cost-of-living crisis and opting for tea due to its lower cost.

With global coffee prices hitting record highs, many operators have been forced to raise prices, making tea an appealing option for cost-conscious consumers. According to World Coffee Portal’s Cakes, Shakes & Tea Breaks 2024 report, 54% of UK coffee shop customers now buy tea out-of-home at least once a week, up from 48% in 2023.

World Coffee Portal’s Project Café UK 2025 report also found that the average price for a 12oz hot tea at UK branded coffee shops is £2.80 ($3.47), compared to £3.64 ($4.51) for a regular latte or cappuccino of the same size.
