In Luzerne County’s Back Mountain, a former ATM drive-thru has been transformed into a unique coffee shop, offering a convenient spot for locals to grab a warm beverage, especially in the cold winter months.
Customers are loving the drive-thru option at Drip Coffee, which helps them escape the freezing temperatures while enjoying a hot drink. “Well, yeah, when it’s 15 degrees, that’s pretty convenient,” said Jim Regan, a Dallas resident.
Although the inside of the tiny shop can be hot and steamy, the baristas working the drive-thru window often have to bundle up to stay warm. “Before we go into work, nobody really knows what shift you’re gonna be on—whether it’s window, hot bar, or cold bar. So, I always bring layers, just in case,” said Hannah Gozikowski, a barista from Dallas. “If I’m on windows, I’m not cold. I’ll shift.”
The chilly weather sometimes creeps inside as staff work with loyalty cards, payments, and orders. “Yeah, it’s pretty bad. Sometimes I’ll take a hot cup, put hot water in it, and hold it while I’m at the window,” said Caroline Warner, another Dallas local who works at Drip. “It gets a little chilly.”
Despite the cold, there’s still plenty of demand for both hot and cold drinks, but the warm beverages are especially appreciated by the staff. “That’s definitely so nice, handing something warm out the window,” said Hannah.
Despite the challenges of working in freezing temperatures, the baristas love their job, though many, like Caroline, are ready for warmer weather. “So, I am done with the cold. I’m done with the ice,” she shared. “I don’t like waking up in the morning and feeling the freezing cold. I rush to my vehicle and turn the heat on full blast.”
