Mike Adams, owner of Firehouse Coffee in Berks County, has been facing a tough challenge: skyrocketing prices for his Honduras coffee beans. The cost of imported beans has surged by 60 to 75%, causing a significant strain on his business.
“It really hits the business owner,” Adams explained. “You want to raise your prices, but you also have to stay within a reasonable margin. People aren’t going to pay $35 for a bag of coffee.”
As a result, Adams has raised the price of his bagged coffee by $2 per pound, and the cost of a cup of coffee has climbed to $4.
This price hike is part of a larger issue in the coffee industry, with bean prices reaching a 50-year high. Experts point to climate change as a major factor, severely affecting coffee farmers in South America.
Despite the rising costs, Adams remains committed to quality. “We’re not going to buy lesser quality beans,” he said firmly. “We’ll always maintain the same high standard of coffee.”
