Frank Oliver may not be a coffee expert, but he knows how to spot a great location. As a real estate broker in Santa Clara County since 1975, Oliver recognized the potential of Camino Coffee when it opened in Gilroy last year. The café, located in a renovated 1930s gas station across from the Caltrain stop on Monterey Road, quickly became a favorite stop for locals and commuters alike.
“It’s a social place,” said Oliver. “It’s where everything’s happening.”
Oliver partnered with Oakland-based family-run Proyecto Diaz Coffee to provide the café’s drinks, keeping the menu simple with cappuccinos, cortados, lattes, mochas, teas, and pastries. The café also adds a special touch, such as a seasonal winter menu and a “neapolitan” cold brew that blends strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors.
While Oliver may not drink coffee often, his marketing expertise helped Camino Coffee become a gathering spot for the community. The café features a cozy ambiance with a record player in the corner, where customers are welcome to bring their own vinyl to play. There’s also a Saturday morning ukulele jam and a running club that uses Camino as its meeting point.
Manager Daniel Reich said there are plans to expand the café with outdoor seating and more shade for next summer.
Camino Coffee opened on February 29, 2024, and will celebrate its first anniversary with special offers on February 28 and March 1, since Leap Day only comes once every four years.
