Sydney’s Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters has been named the best coffee shop in the world, surpassing Melbourne, known for its strong coffee culture, in a global ranking of top cafés.
The café ranked first on the “World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops” list, with Onyx Coffee Lab from Arkansas, Gota Coffee Experts from Vienna, Proud Mary Coffee from Melbourne, and Tim Wendelboe from Oslo rounding out the top five. The top 10 also included cafés from Singapore, France, Malaysia, and Colombia.
Cafés were evaluated based on coffee and food quality, sustainability practices, and customer service. Both public votes and expert opinions contributed to the rankings. Jody Leslie, general manager of Toby’s Estate, expressed excitement over the recognition. “We’ve been in the coffee game for a long time, and to be acknowledged like this is amazing,” she told CNN Travel. The café’s flagship location in Chippendale, Sydney, took the top honour.
Founded in 1997 by Toby Smith, Toby’s Estate began in his garage and has since expanded to locations across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Middle East. The recognition has led to a boost in sales, as people flock to taste the award-winning coffee. To thank their loyal customers, Toby’s Estate will host a free coffee day on February 27.
While Sydney takes the crown, Melbourne’s Proud Mary Coffee ranked fourth, fueling the ongoing rivalry between the two cities. Traditionally known as Australia’s coffee capital, Melbourne now faces rising competition as Sydney’s coffee scene continues to grow.
