Amid growing national pride, Black Creek Coffee is stirring up a fresh wave of patriotism with its new “Canadiano” coffee, a playful twist on the classic Americano.
The Georgetown Market Place coffee bar has been buzzing with excitement as locals share photos of the updated menu, where the Americano is crossed out and replaced with the Canadiano. The lighthearted change has sparked conversation and provided a fun topic for the community.
For owner Rob Smith, the name change is more than just a joke—it’s a statement motivated by the current state of international relations. He made the switch “to show a little bit of patriotism” in light of the ongoing tensions between Canada and the U.S.
Smith polled his employees on the idea, and it received unanimous support. “It’s generated a lot of conversation,” Smith said. “We have a lot of people taking photos of the menu.”
The decision comes amidst economic tensions, including U.S. tariffs and former President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Canada become America’s 51st state. The strained relations have also been reflected in sports, where fans have booed The Star-Spangled Banner at hockey games.
As patriotism grows across the country, many businesses are embracing the Canadian spirit. From maple leaf-inspired products to flags adorning storefronts, the wave of national pride is visible everywhere.
For Smith, supporting Canada has always been part of Black Creek’s identity. Since launching the business, he has prioritized buying local, with packaging made in Burlington, boxes produced in Brampton, and tea sourced from Genuine Tea in Toronto.
“From the start, we’ve been a big supporter of buying Canadian,” Smith said.
Black Creek’s commitment to local goes beyond coffee—it also extends to community support. A portion of the shop’s earnings benefits dog rescue charities.
The Americano, which the Canadiano is based on, has its roots in World War II. American soldiers in Italy, unfamiliar with the strong local espresso, requested cafes add water to their drinks. This adaptation became popular with foreign visitors and led to the Americano’s lasting appeal.
With its new Canadiano, Black Creek Coffee continues to honor its Canadian roots while embracing a playful spirit of national pride.
