For the very first time, the World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC) is set to be held in the United States. The venue will be the Specialty Coffee Expo in Houston, with the event taking place from April 25 – 27, 2025.
This competition, which is part of the Houston World Coffee Championships (WCC), is expected to attract over 25 champions and top – notch competitors to the George R. Brown Convention Center. Since its inception in 2013, this is anticipated to be the largest – scale edition of the WCRC so far.
The World Coffee Championships (WCC) consist of a series of seven annual competitions that are hosted at major coffee events around the world. These events serve as a platform to exhibit the skills of coffee professionals in diverse areas of coffee preparation and service. Organized by more than 50 global entities, the WCC events maintain their appeal for both participants and onlookers through regular updates to their rules, formats, and the equipment used.
After the WCRC in Houston, the 2025 competition season will carry on with the Jakarta World Coffee Championships. Scheduled from May 15 – 17 at the World of Coffee in Jakarta, Indonesia, this event will feature the World Brewers Cup.
Subsequently, the Geneva World Coffee Championships will be held from June 26 – 28 at the World of Coffee in Geneva, Switzerland. Here, more than 80 competitors will vie for the top spots in the World Latte Art, World Coffee in Good Spirits, World Cup Tasters, and Cezve/Ibrik Championships. The 2025 season will come to a close from October 17 – 21 at HostMilano in Milan, Italy, marking the 25th anniversary of the World Barista Championship.
During the WCRC, competitors will demonstrate their roasting prowess through sample roasting, the open cupping process, and their proficiency in achieving the desired roast profile by completing a modified SCA Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) Descriptive Assessment. Judges will assess the accuracy of the competitors’ self – evaluations and conduct double – blind sensory tests across multiple categories.
