Hub Coffee Roasters’ Largest Cafe Brews Up Community Spirit in Reno

by Crystal-cq

Hub Coffee Roasters has made a significant splash in Reno, Nevada, with the opening of its third and largest café. This new establishment, nestled in the Reno Experience District (RED) development, shines a spotlight on partnerships with three distinct coffee farms in Colombia.

Spanning an impressive 3,100 square feet, the two – story café offers an abundance of guest seating, making it an ideal venue for meetings and small events. The interior is a captivating blend of steel, stone, and concrete, enlivened by potted greenery. Light wooden shelves and tabletops accentuate the space across its multiple levels. Complementing this, two separate bars are strategically positioned to cater to diverse customer needs.

Hub Coffee Roasters Owner Mark Trujillo shared his vision with Daily Coffee News, stating, “We want our stores to embody our ‘Hub Means Nevada’ motto.” The café features Nevada mountainscapes gracing the walls, and the furniture and decor adhere to a desert – themed color palette. Adding to the unique ambiance, decorative golden bike wheels adorn the walls, paying homage to the café’s name and its strong support from the cycling community. Trujillo further elaborated, “Gold accents are sprinkled throughout the store to reflect our ‘Good as Gold’ philosophy. Since the Hub’s inception, it has been centered around coffee, community, and bikes.”

The journey of Hub Coffee Roasters began in 2009 when Mark Trujillo, along with his children Joey and Jessica, launched the business from a small garage in Midtown Reno. Initially, they roasted coffee using a San Franciscan SF1 machine. As the company grew, they upgraded to an SF6 and later to their current SF25. In 2018, a Loring S7 was added to their roasting arsenal.

Over the years, the café’s retail operations have seen their fair share of ups and downs, with multiple openings and closings. The Riverside location by the Truckee River, which opened in 2012, holds the distinction of being Hub’s oldest among its three current cafes. The Meadowcreek café in South Reno joined the fold two years ago.

The year 2016 was a pivotal moment for Hub. Vicente Mejia, who would soon become a co – founder of Colombia – based exporter Clearpath Coffee, came to Reno for a six – week mentorship program with Trujillo through the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative. Subsequently, Trujillo traveled to Colombia with Mejia and met coffee producer Rodrigo Sanchez, whose coffees Hub had previously roasted. This encounter blossomed into a business partnership among the three men, leading to their joint ownership of three coffee farms in Colombia.

In 2020, the trio acquired the 33 – hectare Finca Las Nubes in Huila. The following year, they purchased the 66 – hectare Finca Las Veraneras, and in 2022, they added Finca Monte Bonito, a 10 – hectare certified – organic farm that practices regenerative agriculture. Trujillo noted, “We consistently offer a washed and natural process coffee from Finca Las Nubes throughout the year. The coffees from the other farms are more specialty and seasonal. For instance, last year in 2024, we had a Gesha from Las Veraneras that received a 95 score from the Coffee Review.”

These carefully sourced coffees are roasted by Hub Coffee Head Roaster Harrison DeSio in a dedicated 2,500 – square – foot roasting facility in Reno. Some of these delectable brews find their way to one of the two espresso bars at the RED location. At the high – volume bar, an Eversys Enigma churns out espresso, while a second bar hosts a rotating single – origin espresso program, equipped with a La Marzocco Swan grinder and a Victoria Arduino Eagle Tempo espresso machine. Cold brew and a daily rotating single – origin hot drip coffee are prepared on a Ground Control machine, and house drip and other options are dispensed from a Wilber Curtis G4 Thermo Pro Twin.

Hub Coffee Roasters seems to be on an upward trajectory, with its new RED location offering even more to the community. Trujillo said, “Our upstairs area is available for rent and can accommodate up to 76 guests, making it perfect for hosting meetings, gatherings, classes, and community events. It’s a full – circle moment for us as we started Hub to be a community hub. We’re also thrilled to soon introduce a beer and wine program at this location.”
