Corner Bakery Cafe is launching a significant store refurbishment initiative. By 2027, digital kiosks will be installed at all its locations, as the brand aims to adapt to the growing digitalization trend in the US branded coffee shop market.
The US bakery – café chain was acquired from administration by multi – brand franchisee SSCP Management in June 2023. Based in Texas, SSCP Management announced in a press release that it has invested over $6 million to “revitalize” Corner Bakery’s image since taking over. This investment has been used to update seating, décor, beverage counters, and outdoor spaces.
After a successful trial at two Texas outlets in the first quarter of 2024, digital order kiosks are now being rolled out. The goal is to enhance service speed and make the ordering process more efficient for customers. Corner Bakery also noted that this technology can cut labor costs and generate new revenue through suggestive selling.
SSCP will invest an additional $500,000 in the first half of 2025 to update its 14 Illinois stores. The company anticipates completing renovations across all 100 of its US stores by 2027.
Corner Bakery CEO Chris Dharod stated, “We want our communities to know we’re here for the long – haul. Our loyal customers deserve cafes that offer a special experience. These renovations and tech upgrades show our dedication to enhancing the Corner Bakery experience.”
Digital and automated ordering are rapidly becoming standard in the US branded coffee shop market. World Coffee Portal data reveals that 39% of surveyed US consumers prefer to order via a self – serve machine when available.
As early as 2015, Missouri – based Panera Bread started installing digital order kiosks as part of an in – store brand refresh. Massachusetts – based Dunkin’ introduced this technology in January 2018 as part of its NextGen store model.
Seattle – based Starbucks took self – serve technology to another level in November 2021 by partnering with e – commerce giant Amazon to open a cashierless store in New York. Although this concept didn’t gain traction, Starbucks has since launched over 90 Starbucks Pick Up stores across the US, designed specifically for mobile order collection. Mobile orders now account for more than a third of Starbucks’ US transactions.
