A novel roasting enterprise, Caffeine Control Coffee, has made its debut. Its range of blends is crafted not only for delectable taste but also to offer meticulous control over coffee’s energizing effect.
Launched in Australia by 2013 World Barista Champion Pete Licata and experienced coffee competitor Maria Licata, Caffeine Control initiated direct – to – consumer sales this month. The product line consists of four blends: Full Speed, a fully caffeinated choice; Slow Burn, characterized as moderately caffeinated; Low Impact, described as lightly caffeinated; and Smooth Sailing, the decaffeinated option.
The packaging of all four blends details the proportion, by percentage, of each coffee used in the blend. It also indicates the milligrams of caffeine per serving, as per the company’s recommended brew recipes. Caffeine Control revealed that recipe testing involves the use of a Lighttells CA – 700 caffeine and chlorogenic acid analyzer.
The current Full Speed blend is a 50/50 combination of “Kenya – process” (sometimes known as “double – washed”) coffee from El Salvador and a natural – process coffee from Brazil. Slow Burn and Low Impact are composed of varying ratios of the El Salvador coffee and an EA – decaf – process coffee from Colombia. Meanwhile, Smooth Sailing is a single – origin offering of the decaf Colombia coffee.
Pete Licata informed Daily Coffee News that the coffees and their ratios might change in the future, depending on seasonality and the quality evaluations by the married founders of Caffeine Control.
Licata told DCN, “I aim to develop these blends over time to add more complexity and distinctiveness. The Full Speed blend will likely become a three – bean mixture in the future. Smooth Sailing will transform into a blend of different decaf methods and processes to create an even more intriguing product. Low Impact and Slow Burn will probably remain as counterparts to maintain similar caffeine levels, currently 50 and 90 milligrams per serving.”
The company also offers a fifth option, the 4 – Week Reduction Plan Box. It contains smaller quantities of all four products, designed for those looking to gradually reduce their caffeine intake.
Pete Licata explained, “There are multiple factors at play, such as genetics, age, hormones, and liver function, including the rate of caffeine metabolism. Some individuals can quickly process caffeine and have no issues at night, while others are highly sensitive and even one cup can keep them awake. Most of us are moderate metabolizers, yet it’s easy to over – consume.”
Based in Melbourne, the Licatas currently source green coffees through Australian importers FTA Coffee and Condesa Co.Lab. Roasting takes place on Diedrich roasters at the Melbourne co – roastery Criteria Coffee.
Regarding sourcing, Licata said, “I believe there will always be a standout bean in the blends. So, we search for an excellent arabica and a great decaf, and then build the blends around them. However, we’re open to changing the beans to ensure we first get a delicious – tasting blend, and secondly, achieve the targeted caffeine levels.”
