Flo Group and NatureWorks have unveiled Keygea, a compostable single-serve coffee pod aimed at promoting sustainability in the coffee industry. The new product was developed in partnership between Flo Group, a European vending and food packaging company, and NatureWorks, a global leader in PLA-based biopolymers.
Keygea represents a significant step forward in the ongoing effort to reduce the environmental impact of single-use coffee pods. Made from compostable materials such as PLA (polylactic acid), the pod is designed to maintain convenience and freshness while offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic pods.
PLA, a biopolymer derived from renewable resources like corn or sugarcane, has been used for decades but has gained popularity in recent years, especially in packaging. The demand for PLA has surged, particularly in the single-use packaging sector. Statista projects the global PLA market, which also includes applications in agriculture, textiles, and 3D printing, will grow at a nearly 12% compound annual rate, potentially exceeding $3 billion by 2032.
