Swedish coffee roaster Löfbergs, in collaboration with horticultural company Weibulls, has developed an innovative product called Coffee Soil. This is a peat – free potting mix crafted from upcycled coffee beans.
Since 2021, Löfbergs and Evergreen Garden Care, Weibulls’ parent company, have been jointly working towards a circular solution for coffee waste. Coffee beans that fail to meet Löfbergs’ stringent quality standards, instead of being thrown away, are composted. Through this process, they are transformed into a nutrient – rich soil.
In 2024 alone, Löfbergs estimates that as much as 106 tonnes of coffee waste were utilized in the production of Coffee Soil.
Anders Thorén, the Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs, remarks, “We’ve managed to reduce our production waste to a mere 0.32 per cent. This project serves as an excellent example of how leftovers can be effectively repurposed in a smart and circular manner. We hope that more coffee roasters will follow our lead in minimizing industry – wide waste.”
Peatlands are significant carbon stores. The extraction of peat is a major environmental issue because it releases large quantities of carbon dioxide. Evergreen Garden Care is committed to seeking sustainable alternatives, and coffee waste has proven to be an effective substitute. Currently, Coffee Soil is available at selected retailers and also for purchase online.
Established in 1906 in Karlstad, Löfbergs has grown to become one of the largest family – owned coffee roasteries in the Nordic region. The company initiated its coffee – exporting journey in 1993, and today, it sells every second cup of its coffee outside of Sweden. Löfbergs has subsidiaries across multiple countries including Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom.
