Honduras has officially signed the International Coffee Agreement 2022 at the International Coffee Organization (ICO) headquarters in London, UK, solidifying its dedication to the global coffee supply chain.
The 2022 International Coffee Agreement places a strong emphasis on sustainable coffee production and consumption, enhancing the livelihoods of farmers, and addressing climate change. Ambassador Eduardo Enrique Reina, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras, along with Ambassador Iván Romero – Martínez, the Permanent Representative of Honduras to the ICO, were responsible for the signing.
The signing of the ICA 2022 is seen as a significant step in Honduras’ commitment to fostering dialogue between coffee – exporting and importing nations, as well as the private sector. The overarching goal is to secure a more sustainable and prosperous future for all participants in the coffee value chain.
As the world’s fourth – largest Arabica coffee producer and the leading coffee exporter in the Central American and Mexican region, Honduras holds a crucial position in the global coffee market. In 2023, the country’s coffee exports were valued at over US$1.5 billion, constituting nearly 12% of its total merchandise exports.
Beyond signing the agreement, Ambassador Reina declared Honduras’ intention to host the 140th Session of the International Coffee Council (ICC) in San Pedro Sula from September 22 – 26, 2025. This event will gather coffee leaders from around the world, providing a platform to showcase Honduras’ coffee industry.
Gerardo Patacconi, the ICO’s Head of Operations, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are truly honored to welcome Honduras as a signatory of the ICA 2022. In the spirit of international cooperation, we celebrate the diverse coffee traditions and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding, promoting, and sustaining the coffee sector. We are confident that through collaboration within the ICO, we can mobilize additional resources and funding, meet the needs of Honduran producers, and engage consumers globally in recognizing the richness of Honduran coffee, its environmental stewardship, and its sustainable production practices.”
