Tyler and DJ Sutton are the new owners of J&B Coffee, located on 26th Street and Boston Avenue in Lubbock. The couple’s connection to the coffee shop runs deep, as it was the place where they first met and created many memories during their time at Texas Tech University.
The couple’s story began in 2012 at the original J&B Coffee location on 19th Street, which has since closed. DJ shared, “My roommate told me I should come to J&B because she met someone I might like.”
Tyler recalls, “I told her, ‘Hey, I think your friend’s pretty cute. You should let us meet.’” The two also laughed about their first interaction involving a borrowed computer charger, which led to more visits and study sessions at the coffee shop.
“We always had an excuse to meet up. We would go to the coffee shop and study together,” DJ said.
During his time between undergraduate and graduate school, Tyler worked as a barista, gaining valuable insights into the coffee shop business. “I got to learn the business a lot more and see how the operations worked,” Tyler said.
The Suttons, who married in 2015, have continued to visit J&B Coffee as a family. They fondly remember grabbing to-go coffees and spending time outside during the pandemic. “You can’t make it up. We met here. We got to raise our kids and bring them here,” DJ said.
Tyler had expressed interest in taking over the business years ago when the previous owner mentioned the possibility of selling. Things came together, and the Suttons officially became the owners of J&B Coffee on April 1st.
