Coffee drinkers may soon feel the impact of higher prices due to President Trump’s sweeping tariffs. Coffee shops in Columbia are bracing for price increases on everything from napkins to coffee beans.
Parker Boone, a shift lead at Acola Coffee, believes the tariffs could lead to price hikes, even if they are semi-permanent. “This is already a volatile product, and adding uncertainty to the market will likely result in hyperinflation and shortages,” Boone said.
Andrew DuCharme, part-owner of Lakota Coffee, has not yet felt the effects of the tariffs, as he buys his beans in bulk. However, DuCharme shares Boone’s concerns. Both he and Boone emphasized that the cost of a cup of coffee isn’t only impacted by the price of beans. Supplies such as cups and other materials also face tariff increases.
