Cuvee Coffee, a beloved coffee shop and roaster in Austin, is closing its nearly decade-old cafe in East Austin. The establishment, located at 2000 East Sixth Street in the Holly neighborhood, will serve its final customers on Wednesday, May 29.
The decision to close the East Sixth location stems from rising rent costs, as noted in an announcement on Instagram. Consequently, Cuvee Coffee opted not to renew its lease. The cafe had earned a reputation for its diverse range of caffeinated beverages, including espressos, lattes, its renowned nitro cold brew, canned coffee options like horchata, beers, and cocktails, including the popular espresso martini.
Despite the closure, Cuvee Coffee maintains a physical presence in Austin. The company has already expanded with a new cafe in downtown Austin, situated within the Natiivo condo high-rise at 48 East Avenue near Rainey Street. This new location, which appears to have opened in February 2023, features a lobby coffee bar known as C-Bar by Cuvee Coffee, offering an array of coffee drinks, espressos, and cocktails.
Founded in 1998 by Mike McKim, Cuvee Coffee has been a staple in the Austin coffee scene, known for sourcing and roasting quality coffee beans. Initially, the company had a retail presence within the New Texan restaurant Salt & Time on East Seventh before opening its East Sixth cafe in 2014.
This move mirrors a trend among long-established Austin businesses relocating from their original locations. For instance, South Austin bar and restaurant House Wine recently closed its Josephine Street location and plans to reopen in a new spot on South First in June.
