Tru Coffee, a beloved fixture at 287 N. Linn St. in downtown Iowa City, has shuttered its operations as of June 1. Owner Haley Kesterson announced the closure in an Instagram post on Tuesday evening, citing the conclusion of their tenure at the location.

In her statement, Kesterson expressed uncertainty about the future of Tru Coffee but emphasized the importance of taking a pause for introspection. “We’re incredibly thankful for the support of the community throughout the years,” the post conveyed. “Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to pursue our passion. As we look back on the memories we’ve made — the laughter among our baristas, the special events we’ve hosted, and all the conversations and connections over coffee — we’re filled with gratitude for this experience.”

Founded in June 2021 and named in honor of Kesterson’s late mother Trudi, Tru Coffee distinguished itself by offering a curated selection of coffees sourced from Dogwood in Minneapolis, Vertex in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Be Bright in Los Angeles, alongside a range of vintage thrifted clothing.

Over its operational span, the coffee shop became a focal point for community engagement, hosting various events such as a notable fashion show in spring 2023.
