Café Mulé Plans Tribute to Richard with New Pack Animal

by Jessica

Café Mulé, the beloved trailside coffee service operating in the Boise Foothills, faces a poignant moment as Richard, the iconic pack mule who has been an integral part of the operation since its inception in 2016, battles aggressive cancer. The news, shared through a heartfelt update on a GoFundMe page, has stirred emotions among the community that cherishes Richard’s role and companionship.

Matt Bishop, a former Army Special Forces veteran and the founder of Café Mulé, expressed sorrow over Richard’s condition, noting that the mule’s time with them is expected to be brief. “Sadly, Richard will be going to a pack string in the sky within a few months,” Bishop lamented. “His departure will leave a significant void in our hearts and practically within our team.”

In response to Richard’s impending loss, Café Mulé launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe, initially targeting $7,500 to acquire another mule to fill the void. The campaign has exceeded its goal, showcasing the community’s support and affection for Richard.

“We’ll never find another mule quite like Richard, but we aim to find a companion that Eugene, our company’s donkey, can bond with,” Bishop explained. “We are looking for a mule that embodies the same character traits and charm that Richard brought to our team. Meet Richard II, whose true name is yet to be determined.”

Bishop recounted his recent encounter with a promising young mule named “Scotty” during the Mule Days festival in Bishop, CA. “Scotty instantly connected with me,” Bishop recounted. “His personable nature and demeanor reminded me so much of Richard. We’ve decided to bid for Scotty this weekend.”

However, if the bid for Scotty does not succeed, the funds raised will be used to secure another suitable and young mule by the end of the summer. The GoFundMe campaign, which has garnered widespread support, will conclude this weekend.

Reflecting on Café Mulé’s journey and the community’s role in Richard’s legacy, Bishop emphasized their commitment to community engagement and support. “From our humble beginnings serving coffee on the trails to ongoing donations for trail maintenance, our community has been instrumental,” Bishop remarked. “Richard’s journey was shaped by the community’s love and encouragement, urging us to continue our trailside coffee service.”

As Café Mulé prepares to bid farewell to Richard and welcome a new companion, the outpouring of support underscores the lasting impact of Richard’s presence and the enduring spirit of community that defines Café Mulé’s mission.
