by Jessica

Coffee and college often go hand in hand, fueling countless late-night study sessions and exam cramming sessions. Recognizing the growing importance of the coffee industry, Texas A&M University has introduced the first academic certificate in coffee processing and quality in the United States.

Announced earlier this month, the new program aims to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the expanding coffee sector. Mian Riaz, director of the Extrusion Technology Program and associate head of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Texas A&M, discussed the initiative in an interview with The Standard.

Riaz explained that the program originated from the university’s Center for Coffee Research and Education, which has long supported coffee growers in improving crop quality. Recognizing the need to educate students on coffee processing and flavor development, Texas A&M crafted a curriculum designed to prepare graduates for diverse roles within the industry.

The academic certificate, available to all Texas A&M students, consists of four to five courses totaling 15 credit hours. Courses cover sensory evaluation, coffee processing techniques, food safety standards, health benefits, and flavor creation. Riaz emphasized the sequential nature of the coursework, ensuring students gain comprehensive knowledge from growing to brewing.

Upon completion, graduates receive a valuable credential that enhances their job prospects not only in traditional coffee roles but also in coffee-related sectors of the food industry. Riaz clarified that the certificate is intended to supplement existing degrees, providing graduates with an additional specialization in coffee expertise.

In response to inquiries about what defines the perfect cup of coffee, Riaz highlighted the importance of quality beans, precise roasting techniques, and skillful blending. He underscored that mastering these elements is crucial for creating distinctive coffee flavors that appeal to consumers across various products, from beverages to desserts.

The launch of Texas A&M’s coffee certificate marks a significant step in blending academic rigor with practical industry preparation, paving the way for future coffee professionals to make their mark in this dynamic field.
