You Can Now Walk on a Footpath Made from Coffee Concrete

by Jessica

In a groundbreaking development blending sustainability with infrastructure, researchers from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) have unveiled the world’s inaugural footpath constructed from coffee concrete. This innovative material, initially introduced last August, utilizes discarded coffee grounds to create a robust alternative to conventional concrete.

Located in Gisborne, Australia, the newly laid footpath marks a significant milestone in sustainable construction practices. Collaborating with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, RMIT researchers have implemented three distinct concrete sections for comparative study: traditional concrete with sand as the control, wood chip biochar, and coffee biochar—produced by heating used coffee grounds to 350°C in an oxygen-deprived environment.

The project not only addresses environmental concerns by repurposing coffee waste, but also showcases the material’s enhanced strength, reportedly 30% higher than traditional counterparts. As pedestrians now tread upon this experimental path, ongoing monitoring by RMIT will assess durability and performance across the varied concrete types.

“The potential impact is vast,” emphasizes RMIT, underscoring the prospect of scaling up coffee concrete adoption throughout Australia. Partnering with industry leaders like BildGroup, RMIT plans to integrate this eco-friendly innovation into upcoming civil infrastructure projects across Victoria.

Australia alone annually discards an estimated 75 million kilograms of coffee grounds, predominantly destined for landfills—a stark contrast to the resource’s potential application in concrete production. With its higher density compared to sand, coffee grounds could substantially mitigate sand depletion, potentially replacing up to 655 million kilograms annually if adopted globally—an equivalent of nearly 90 billion kilograms of sand.

As global environmental challenges persist, initiatives like the coffee concrete footpath exemplify the transformative power of sustainable engineering, paving the way for a greener, more resilient future in construction and beyond.
