EDGWOOD, Pa. — The anticipated opening of Spigolo coffee shop in Edgewood has been abruptly delayed after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the building overnight, creating a substantial hole in the storefront.
Co-owners Jessica George and Ben Blackmore, who had been eagerly preparing for the grand opening scheduled in just weeks, expressed deep disappointment. “We were so close to actually scheduling an opening date, and we had been telling people about a month, so it just kind of felt like everything collapsed around us. I mean, it did,” George lamented.
The coffee shop, a year-long labor of love for George and Blackmore, was on the brink of unveiling its doors to the community when the unexpected incident occurred. Blackmore described the emotional toll of witnessing the damage: “A lot of tears, and some words were screamed and we got it all out, got a lot of the emotions out. Just about an hour being pretty upset, and then just the forward thinking.”
Despite the setback, both owners remain resilient in their commitment to see Spigolo through to opening day. “While the damage has caused a delay, we are determined to open Spigolo at 100 Maple Avenue,” George affirmed. Although a new opening date has not yet been set, the duo plans to host a pop-up fundraiser in their parking lot on August 24, coinciding with Edgewood Community Days.
The community has rallied behind George and Blackmore, showing support as they navigate this unforeseen challenge.
