Pret A Manger is encountering significant backlash after revealing changes to its coffee subscription service. Currently, subscribers pay £30 per month for up to five coffees a day. Starting in September, this will be replaced by a £10 monthly plan offering up to five half-price coffees daily, with the removal of the 20% food discount.
Many subscribers have expressed anger online, with some calling the move a “massive mistake” and threatening to switch to competitors. Critics argue that the new model is a “big, big mistake.”
Retail analyst Natalie Berg supports the change, suggesting the old model was too complex and alienated potential customers. She believes the simplified pricing will attract a broader audience.
Managing Director Clare Clough defended the shift, stating that while the original subscription was innovative during the pandemic, the new approach aims to provide better value for all customers.
